Naming of Written Characters in Philipp Ruhig’s Littauisch–Deutsches und Deutsch–Littauisches Lexicon (1747)
Abstract
This study, dedicated to the history of linguistic terminology, analyses words denoting writting characters: letter, number character, period, diacritical mark, comma, and colon, included in Philipp Ruhig’s (Pilypas Ruigys, 1675–1749) dictionary Littauisch–Deutsches und Deutsch–Littauisches Lexicon (1747). The article also examines the connections of these terms with the sources of Ruhig’s dictionary and the dissemination in East Prussian Lithuanian and German dictionaries of the 19th century.
